Software technology for federated analytics and federated learning enables data science while keeping data at the sourceāan approach offering significant privacy benefits in healthcare. Although the technology has matured, healthcare institutions have been slow to adopt it. The FEDANAL project aims to foster the transition to a federated approach to analytics, with a specific focus on breast cancer care. The project has delivered three key outputs:
- An article titled āThe dual-bottleneck of federated analytics in breast cancer research: A systematic literature review,ā submitted to the journal *PLOS Digital Health*.
- A project proposal titled āFABRIC: Federated Analytics Breast cancer Research InfrastruCtureā with a budget of ā¬1 million, submitted to the NWO Open Technology Programme (OTP) 2026.
- A broad consortium was assembled for this purpose, comprising UT, MU, UMCG, DICA, IKNL, DHD/PLUGIN, Santeon, ZGT, MST, and MDW.
A proof-of-concept demonstrator of an analytics tool that answers a representative clinical analytical question using a federated approach based on data from DICA.
