In August 2026, the University of Twente launches the Community of Practice on Energy-Efficient Computing. Supported by the university's research institutes, this initiative brings together researchers, practitioners and external partners with a shared ambition: reducing the energy footprint of computing.

As computing becomes increasingly central to society - from artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure to embedded systems and industrial automation- its energy consumption is also growing rapidly. Addressing this challenge requires expertise across the entire computing chain, from chips and hardware to software, AI, cloud infrastructure and end-user applications.

The University of Twente already brings together expertise across this entire ecosystem. The Community of Practice connects researchers, companies, public organisations and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge, develop collaborations and accelerate innovation in energy-efficient computing.

Activities and Themes

Over the coming months, the community will organise a range of activities, including informal meet-ups, invited talks, collaborative workshops and hands-on events. Topics include:

  • Sustainable AI and machine learning
  • Energy-efficient chips and hardware
  • Robotics and embedded systems
  • Edge versus cloud computing
  • Cybersecurity and energy efficiency
  • Human behaviour, policy and rebound effects
