Description: Pastoral communities in Kenya face growing risks from climate change and extreme weather. Financial tools that trigger payouts based on satellite-detected forage scarcity aim to strengthen resilience, but face challenges due to limited understanding of how satellite data reflects household impacts. Innovative combination of new-generation satellite series and field data collection efforts can address such challenges. The Senior Expert will help develop Earth observation solutions to better understand the complex links between climate, rangeland, and livestock by 1) addressing weaknesses in financial instrument design, 2) enhancing collection and use of in-situ longitudinal data, and 3) piloting innovative satellite applications.
